Lomonosov

The town of Lomonosov is 40 kilometres west of St. Petersburg. The historical name of Lomonosov is Oranienbaum, which means orange tree in German.

In the middle of the eighteenth century, not far from Oranienbaum, a factory of artistic colored glassware was founded by the Russian scientist, Mikhail Lomonosov.
In 1948 the town was renamed after him. The population is currently about 47,000.

The emergence and development of Lomonosov is linked to the construction of a palace and park complex there in 1710 for the grand duke Alexander Menshikou, a close friend of Peter the Great and, the first Governor General of St Petersburg.

The large baroque-style palace and the Lower Park were constructed to the design of the architects I-G. Schadel and G-M. Fontane. In the mid-18th century Peter III's Palace, the Chinese Palace and the Sliding Hill Pavilion were built by the architect A. Rinaldi

The Chinese Palace is a splendid monument of Rococo architecture.

Its interiors are striking for the wealth and variety of their decor. Particularly exquisite is the Buglework Study.

The staterooms are adorned with stylized Chinese motifs, hence the name.

Thanks to the defenders of the Oranienbaum bridgehead, Lomonosov was not occupied by the German forces during World War II. As a result, the astonishing masterpieces of architecture created by the designs of eminent architects have been preserved until today.

That is why the memorials of culture and historical heritage in Lomonosov were preserved with the exceptional authenticity and completeness

The palaces and parks of Lomonosov served as the summer residences of the nobility until 1917.
