ANACORTES SISTER CITIES ASSOCIATION
GENERAL MEETING MINUTES
July 10, 2003
PRESENT: 35 Members and 15 guests signed in, however, the "head count" was about 60 people. Featured guest: Dr. Doug Clark
The president, Duane Clark, called the meeting to order at 7:01 pm.
He introduced the guests and welcomed all.
SECRETARY'S REPORT: The president called for a motion to approve the minutes as recorder and distributed. Motion carried.
An e-mail from the Kosokov family, Lomonosov, Russia was read, in which they sited their new website.
Jo reported 117 members currently. The July 3rd, Tri-tip dinner, was to honor the Town Criers, was attended by 47 people and the July 4th Spaghetti dinner was attended by 45 people.
TREASURERS REPORT: In the absence of Mark Lijek, treasurer, Duane reported: Checking acct. balance $3072.
Scholarship acct. 1734.
Kisakata acct. 5632.
Doyle reported that the 2003 Golf Tournament raised $4200. for the Kisakata trip.
97 golfers participated who are anxious to play again next year. The distribution of the funds is: $2000. to the Student Exchange Program; $1500. to the Scholarship Fund and $700. to the General Fund.
VICE PRESIDENTS REPORT: Don reported that the Mayor of Vela Luka, Croatia is continuing to work on a Vela Luka-Anacortes Sister City relationship.
Don asked that members be thinking about a Christmas party and bring their ideas to the August meeting.
SIDNEY: Judy reported a successful Town Criers Competition and thanked all who made it so. She has participated in a variety of events this month, among which are the Oak Bay parade; the dedication of the new Ferry Terminal in Sidney, BC; and Canada Day. Future activities include the Chester Town Criers Competition, June 11-18, 2003 in Chester, England.
Andy presented the 2nd place winner of the LaConner Criers contest to Judy Jewell
(who apparently was surprised!). He also announced the winners of the LaConner raffle.
KISAKATA: Doyle said that the student exchange is going well. The Taiko drums transportation has been arranged, thanks to the Staabs loan of their van.
Tickets for the Taiko Drummers performance at Brodniak Hall on August 2, 7 pm, are available from Doyle, Joyce, Watermark Books, etc. Pre-sale price of tickets is $8. Tickets at the door are $10.

LOMONOSOV: Ralph reported that the Kosokov family will return to Anacortes for the 2004 Arts Festival and other west coast venues.
Maria Kirjaeva of Lomonosov, Russia arrives July 11th 2003 and will depart for home on August 27, 2003. She will take Anacortes artists works back to Lomonosov for their Art Festival to be held Sept. 11, 2003.
ALL MEMBERS ARE INVITED TO A WELCOMING RECEPTION FOR MARIA ON JULY 13, 2003 from 3 to 4 pm at the SENIOR CENTER.
Please bring cookies and we'll have the punch ready!
There will also be a combined "Going away/birthday" party for Maria on August 24th at the Skyline Cabana. (Her birthday is August 28th).

JAKOBSTAD, Finland: Margo reported we have a letter from Jamstown, NY changing the Jakobstad/Jamestown relationship to "Emeritus" status. As soon as the details have been worked out with the Sister Cities International and Jakobastad has been notified, Margo will proceed with contacting Mayor Goran Honga in Jakobstad to establish our relationship with them as Sister City to Anacortes. PHOTOGRAPHY: Marius is working a a library for the website. Duane reported the formation of a committee to develop an Anacortes Sister City website. Marius agreed to join that committee.
WAYS AND MEANS: Joy announced a garage sale for the Sister Cities on July 11 and 12 to be held on the corner of Kingsway and Sterling. More "stuff" is needed. The items not sold will be offered for sale at the Shipwreck Day, July 19th. Our Shipwreck booths are located on the corner of the Red Snapper.
DR. DOUG CLARK spoke about the excavation and restoration of the Madaba Plains Project, Jordan. His presentation included the retelling of the story of 'Umayri as they concentrate efforts to consolidate, restore and present Tall al-'Umayri. "The Madaba Plains Project has 'become one of the most sophisticated and truly interdisciplinary of all American archaeological excavations in the Middle East,'" and spans some 5000 years.,, Dr. Clark further enhanced his presentation with pictures and artifacts.
