MEMBERSHIP MEETING, June 5, 2003
The meeting was called to order by president, Duane Clark, at 7:14 pm with 37 members present.
MINUTES: Don moved to accept the minutes of May 1, 2003 as published. Margo seconded, Motion passed.
TREASURER'S REPORT: presented by Mark:
Checking account balance $4159.53
Savings Accounts:
Scholarship Fund $233.95
Kisakata Student Exchange Fund $3481.87
Significant events:
We received a late bill for the Sister City Conference which resulted in a $120.02 loss.
The Kisakata students raised another $680.00 (reflected in above balance)
The checking account balance increased by approx. $2000. over last month due to receipt of an $800. donation from the Kiwanis Noon club to help defray costs of the Taiko Drummers, a $500. patron membership from Sam Gebala and income from the upcoming
Golf tournament.
VICE PRESIDENT REPORT; Don introduced Leza Michaelson of Friday Harbor who will speak later. He welcomed Willy and Thomas Evans who had recently returned from Lomonsov, Russia. They reported a wonderful experience.
Don reported that the Newletter should be out by June 15. He reported that the dedication of the ferry terminal at Sidney, BC will be held on June 21st at which time a plaque will be placed to honor John Spaulding. Judy Jewell will participate in the event.
Shipwreck Day will be July 19th. Items to sell are still needed. Call Joy Walters, 293-1082

Student Exchange.
Don introduced Leza Michaelson of Friday Harbor:
Leza reported on the Friday Harbor-Vela Luka, Croatia Sister City activities. Leza related that she
Participated in a student exchange program with Sarajevo, Yugoslavia at age 17. Some 30 years
During the war she was instrumental in supplying needed items for refugees who had fled to Vela Luka. She described the experiences of her "sister" Zelka and family who were refugees from the war and sheltered by the people of Vela Luka. She has enjoyed the close relationship with Zelka and has enjoyed visiting her as well as entertaining Zelka and family on Friday Harbor.
Duane followed up with a review of the ongoing Anacortes-Vela Luka Sister Cities relationship through Sister Cities International:
Vela Luka committee has been established in Anacortes, as follows:
John Lovric, Nikki Lovric, Martin Kolega, and Kristen Lemieux with Don as chair.
Anacortes committee has been established in Vela Luka, as follows:
Dr. Pino Novak, Ivan Mirosevic, Keljka Gugich, Ivan Farchich, Marita Petkovich and Fani Oreb.
DON moved to recomment acceptance of the Anacortes Vela Luka Committee. Seconded by Doyle. Motion carried.
Marius moved to proceed officially with establishing a Sister City relationship with Vela Luka, Croatia. Mark seconded. Motion carried.
Duane then introduced Pat Burleson and students Ethan and Bryan who presented a power point review of their trip to Japan. They were in Tokyo, Koyota, Hiroshima and 2 weeks in sister city, Kisakata, Japan. They enjoyed a rich experience and are ready to return ANY TIME!
JUDY JEWELL: July 4 is the TRIPLE CROWN COMPETITION OF TOWN CRIERS to be held in Anacortes on July 4th. Those Canadians competing will arrive July 2, departing July 5. Members will be responsible for housing/food of the guests. Schedule includes:
July 2 - hosts pick up criers on 2:45 ferry
Dinner at Cap Sante for criers only followed by drinks at Judy's home.
July 3 - 11:00 am bus trip to Fairhaven district, Bellingham. Leaving from Chandlers Square. Box lunch proved by "box lunch committee".
6:00 dinner at the Cabana, Skyline. ALL ARE INVITED
July 4 - 10:00 Pictures taken - Commercial Ave
11:00 Parade followed by Patriotic program at Causland Memorial Park
first "cry" (hometown) follows the Patriotic program.
3:00 - 2nd Cry (fun cry). Judging will take place and results will then be
announced.
6:00 spaghetti dinner (ala David) at the Croatian Club. ALL ARE INVITED.
July 5 - 10:30 Hosts to take Criers and escorts to 2nd and Morris in La Conner for a parade
In downtown La Conner.
11:00 1st Cry (hometown) at Maple Hall
12:30 Lunch at La Conner Retirement Center (Criers only)
Free time until 3:30
4:00 2nd Cry at Maple Hall (fun cry)
5:30 Banquet and entertainment at Maple Hall. ALL ARE INVITED.
Judy asks that you entertain if and when you can at the dinners. The folks in Anacortes love it and we are sure that the LaConner people will have fun with it, too.

KISAKATA: Doyle reported that the 16 Japanese students will be arriving on July 31. The Taiko Drummers will be arriving the following day (after a baseball game in Seattle). The Taiko Drummers Arts Festival performance schedule is: Aug 1 - 7pm, Aug 2 - ll am, BRODNIAK HALL PERFORMANCE - AUGUST 2, 7 PM. Tickets are $10. at the door. Presale tickets may be purchased from Doyle: $8.00 adults/ $4.00 students! CALL HIM! The Oak Harbor Japanese Ladies will also perform at the Brodniak Hall event. DON'T MISS IT!
NEEDED: someone to entertain the 4 adult chaperones while in Anacortes.
JAKOBSTAD: Margo explained the problems with the process of a sister city relationship: Anacortes-Jakobstad. Jamestown, NY now has an official relationship but is inactive. We are waiting on the Jamestown, NY city council to approve the release of Jakobstad from prior sister city relationship.
MARIA PAPRITZ reportes that students who traveled to Lomonosov, Russia have used their experience wisely. Mary Taylor utilized her experiences to fulfill the required Senior Project at the Anacortes High School, and Tyler Hobbs will attend school in Lomonosov next school year.
DUANE provided the ASCA organizational chart which will be discussed at the
July meeting on July 10th.

discussing His "digs" in Jordan, guest speaker.
