ANACORTES SISTER CITY GENERAL MEETING

 

Minutes for Nov. 6, 2003

 

President, Duane Clark, called the meeting to order at 7:02 pm. 

Thirty-one members signed in but it is believed that there were more in attendance.

   

  GUESTS INTRODUCED AND WELCOMED- Duane: Alice Clark  (mother of the president), Pat Paget (back again), Doyle Geer (recovered!) and Cynthia Newport (new member).

  

SECRETARY’S REPORTDon Lapworth moved to accept the minutes of the October meeting as published.  Theda Morton seconded. Motion carried.   Jo reported that there are 128 current members to date.      

 

TREASURER’S REPORT - Mark reported:

                        Checking Account Balance - $3020.55

                        Saving Account Balance :

                                    Scholarship Fund - $1740.05

                                    Kisakata Student Exchange Fund - $9416.25

SIGNIFICANT EVENTS:  The City approved the tourism contract funding for the Town Crier in the amount of $1000. and for the Kazakov folksingers - $1000.  (Comparison with 2003 was $2500. for Town Crier and $1200 for Taiko Drummers).

        $1000 was given to the Mayor to help defray expenses of travel to Kisakata to participate in the 10-year anniversary activities. Because of his mother’s illness (and subsequent death) he was unable to attend. Doug Everhart went instead.                        

        ASCA made a donation of $100. to the Anacortes Boys and Girls Club in memory of Emma Putnam, Mayor Maxwell’s mother.

         City reimbursement was received in the amount of $1657 for expenses incurred in connection with the Taiko drummers and Town Crier. We reimbursed Judy Jewell, Town Crier, $666.73 for expenses incurred while participating in the New Jersey competition.  The request for the city to pay their portion of those costs will be made when all paper work in collected.

          Mark discussed plans and procedures to establish a 501(c)3 fund with the IRS (non-profit).  Discussion followed.

   

 VICE PRESIDENT - Don announced the December 4th Christmas social to be held at the Croatian Hall.  5:30 – 6:00 pm wine…. and the dinner starts at 6:00 pm.  PLEASE CALL JO (293-6923) OR E-MAIL: fuqua4@comcast.net  for reservations and dish to bring. 

            Don showed the redesign of our ASCA pin, which will be produced, in small quantity until the Jakobstad, Finland relationship is completed.

 NEWSLETTER – The next publication will be out early in December.  DEADLINE FOR ITEMS FOR THE NEWSLETTER IS NOVEMBER 14 TO SCOTT GORMAN, e-mail address: scottg@sos.net    Jack Greenewald will continue to publish the newsletter despite his foot surgery.

            The new 2004 dues schedule will be published in the December newsletter.

 WEBSITE – John Lastar, WebMaster, sent a message that he still would welcome pictures of Anacortes to put on the website.  He wants various pictures from around our beautiful city.   

    

 SIDNEY REPORT – Judy attended the 250th anniversary of the city of Sussex County, New Jersey.  She is the AMERICAN CHAMPION CRIER of the October 10-13 competition held in Newton, New Jersey.  She was the only woman of 18 criers – 7 from Canada and 11 from other cities in the USA.  She showed the beautiful trophy with which she returned.  Judy then demonstrated her “cry”.. “The Clark Cry” (which was her last cry of the competition) in which she honored Duane’s mother.  (Duane was born in Sussex, NJ).  Duane’s aunt Madelyn and cousin Judy who lives in Sussex, NJ was present to hear the cry. 

          There is no current news from Sidney, BC.

     

KISAKATA – Doyle commended Doug Everhart (an original member of ASCA) who originated the idea of ASCA. 

           The student meetings will be held after the holidays.

LOMONOSOV – Ralph passed clipboards on which were the proposed projects for members to indicate their interest to participate.

   

 

VELA LUKA – A report from Nikki indicating that they are working on Kumpanija Company (Sword Dancers) for the 2005 Arts Festival.  THIS COMMITTEE IS LOOKING FOR OTHERS TO JOIN THEM.  Please call Don (293-2439 or Duane 293-8088) if you would like to be on this Committee.

            The Committee is planning a trip to Vela Luka in Sept. 2004.  The Vela Luka Dancers will be touring the area during that period of time.  The trip will be 10-14 days in a BEAUTIFUL  part of the world.

            Duane reviewed the development of the Anacortes/Vela Luka relationship….how it came about…the timely response from those in Vela Luka, etc.

       

JAKOBSTAD – In the absence of Margo, Carl reported that things are moving along.

         

WAYS AND MEANS – This committee is planning a garage sale in February at Skyline.  Please call Renate Staab (293-9218) about your donations.

   

PROGRAM – A Power Point presentation was made by Doug Everhart and Jo Fuqua about their trip to Kisakata, Japan for the 10th year celebration ceremony of the Kisakata/Anacortes sister city relationship.
