ANACORTES SISTER CITIES ASSOCIATION
GENERAL
MEETING
PRESIDENT
Duane Clark called the meeting to order
at 7:06 pm. He welcomed the guests
including visitors from Vela Luka, Croatia: Danko Lovricevic, Ivana Sipic, and
Ante Zuvela.
MINUTES:
John Lastar moved to accept
the minutes of the June meeting as published. Willy Evans seconded the motion. Motion
carried.
SIDNEY:
Judy Jewell, chairperson,
reported on the International Town Criers event in Chester, England. Her daughter and David Rapella
accompanied Judy and Andy. Judy
won four awards in Chester for 2004:
Second Place in the first ever held Ladies World Town Crier Tournament; a
Best Content of Cry award; 5th place in the “Lord Mayor of Chester’s
Invitational World Town Crier Tournament,” for which she received a beautiful
Crest of Chester, and Overall Champion award (men’s and
women’s).
She and Andy attended the
Canadian Independence Day parade on July 1 and the Town Criers Competition in La
Conner, WA. where Judy took first place: Redmond O’Colonies, second place and Al
Witcombe took third place. At the Anacortes Town Criers Competition Redmond
O’Colonies took first, Jerry Praver, second place and Bert Stevens took third
place. She expressed her thanks to those members who home-stayed the Town Crier
guests in Anacortes.
TREASURER: Mark Lijek,
Treasurer, reported the following:
Checking Balance
$6,847.81
Savings Account Balances:
Scholarship Fund $953.68
Kisakata Exchange Fund
$14,462.01
Reserve Fund
$4,359.94
Significant Events: The Golf Tournament earned as estimated
total of $5242.54, assuming that the two remaining sponsors come through with
their checks and that there are no further unknown expenses. This compares with $4057.00 last
year. Although we had fewer golfers
this year, the fact that the Anacortes Youth Sports Coalition doubled their
underwriting support from $1500.00 to $3000.00 made the event even more
profitable. $3000.00 has been
transferred to the Kisakata Exchange Fund.
We wired the $1600.00 to a travel agency in Vela Luka to assist in the
travel of the three students.
Virtually all of this money was raised previously by the Vela Luka
committee.
We paid $978.27 to purchase an airline ticket for Mayor Maxwell to travel
to Vela Luka this fall.
We paid Scott Gorman $1000.00 to assist in the trip of Doyle Geer to
Kisakata.
We paid $303.00 for design work and a building permit for the flagpole
project.
Representative Frank Barcott of the American Croatian Club pledged a
contribution of $250.00 to the flag project.
VICE
PRESIDENT: Don Lapworth reported that
the flag project will not be completed in time for the Vela Luka students to
raise the Croatian flag, as planned.
The project is
progressing.
The 18 members traveling to Vela Luka, Croatia will leave Sept. 18, 2004
and return Oct. 6, 2004. The group of 5 traveling with president Duane Clark and
the mayor are on a different schedule.
There will be a meeting of the 18 travelers at Don’s home on July
28th, at 7 pm to discuss further details of the
trip.
KISAKATA: Cora Lijek,
chairperson, reported that the Anacortes students will be leaving for Kisakata
in 3 weeks. They will perform a
line dance at Cap Sante Court Retirement Center on July 13th at 3
pm.
Don presented copies of the
proposed oval logo for ASCA which includes five flags, American and the four
sister cities national flags. After
discussion it was approved providing the crown on the Croatian flag was
reversed. By a separate show of
hands the proposed configuration without flag-poles was
favored.
LOMONOSOV: Suzanne
Harris, chairperson, reported correspondence from Marina Ahkromova indicating
that she is receptive to coming to Anacortes in Sept 2004. The committee is conducting a raffle to
raise the funds for her trip.
Tickets may be purchased at Studio 29, Earthbound Books, Donatello's or
from any Lomonosov committee member.
The raffle winner will receive $250.00 and a set of Russian Matryoshka
Dolls. For more information, please
call 293-8341.
Duane’s Power Point presentation
of the Golf Tournament, composed of pictures taken by John Lastar and Marius
Hibbard, was presented. Duane explained that the reason the tournament is named
DEEN MORRIS GOLF TOURNAMENT is to recognize Deen Morris (deceased husband of
Alene Morris, former Historian.)
Deen was a very active member, traveling to Lomonosov and Kisakata, until
his death.
