GENERAL MEETING

 

June 3, 2004

 

President Duane Clark called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm.

MINUTES: Don moved to accept the minutes for the May 4, 2004 meeting as published.  The motion was seconded and carried.

TREASURER:  Mark announced that the By-laws Revisions will be presented for approval at the July General Meeting.  The By-laws Revisions have been distributed by e-mail and hard copies are available for those not “on line”. 

     The Audit Committee report will be presented at the July General meeting.

Significant Events:

            The Kisakata students and chaperones earned an additional $1616.00 from various fund-raisers.

            We purchased a new banner for the Association, [part of which has replaceable lettering.]  Total cost for the banner and replaceable lettering for the golf tournament was about $225.00.

            We purchased accident and health insurance for the three students from Vela Luka at a cost of $186.30.  This is being paid from the proceeds of the fund-raising done by the Vela Luka committee.

            In order to ensure that adequate funds were available for the board approved expenditures, member-funded travel and sponsored events (such as the Golf Tournament) a reserve fund has been established.

 

VICE PRESIDENT:  The people going to Vela Luka met on May 25th to discuss various aspects of the trip.  The Anacortes-SEATAC transportation will be secured soon.

            Flag project:  Duane and Don will petition the City Council to approve a portion of the 2% funds to this project.  The poles are on order.

            Maria displayed the Lomonosov city flag.

            Duane expressed appreciation for the cooperative efforts of:  the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce; Nels Strandberg, contractor;  the Noon Kiwanis project leader, Doug Colglazier; and the efforts of Don Lapworth for the ASCA.

 

SIDNEY: Judy Jewell leaves for Chester, England on June 4, 2004 and returns on June 27, 2004.  She encouraged ASCA members to attend the Sidney Canada Days on July 1, 2004

The July 4th celebration in Anacortes includes Town Criers from Canada who will be with us July 3, 4 and 5th.  All homestays have been arranged.  Following the parade, patriotic speeches and the Town Crier competition will be held in Causland Park followed by picnic dinner at Waters Edge park.

 

KISAKATA: Cora reminded us of the Golf Tournament and encouraged members to seek/provide sponsorships.  Gifts are being secured for the students to take to Kisakata.  Helpers are needed at the Golf Tournament.  Funds earned go to the ASCA General Fund as well as to the Kisakata Student Exchange Fund. 

            Kisakata has a new mayor. However, Mayor Kon will be among the welcoming people of Kisakata.

            High School Elective Credit is being sought for students in the next Exchange Program.  Screening for those student participants will begin in the fall of 2004.

 

CROATIA: Nikki reported that the three students from Vela Luka will arrive on June 30, 2004.  They will be met at SEATAC by Nikki and John.  The students leave July 23, 2004 at l:l0pm.

            A meeting will be held at Cap Sante Court, 7pm on Wed., June 9th, for homestay hosts and friends.  All interested members are welcome to attend. 

            On July 4th  a dinner will be held at the Waters Edge Health Club park, followed by the fireworks.  Those people interested in attending the dinner are asked to call Nikki at 293-8530 or via e-mail: Lovric@comcast.net .  Parking spaces must be arranged and therefore the need for reservations by June 11th.  Cost of the dinner will be $8.00 per person.

            The Vela Luka students participate in the City Library “GET LOST AROUND THE WORLD WEEK”.  Ante (student) will show how Kumpanija (the Croatian sword dance) is danced and Danko and Ivana are looking for pictures of Vela Luka to present a slide show.  They will also bring some music and cooking recipes that are specific for Croatia and Vela Luka.  Nikki and John will dress in costumes and teach some traditional Croatian Kolos.

 

LOMONOSOV: Maria announced that Marina sent the two Lomonosov city flags.  She reported the many changes in Lomonosov include: Big Super Market, and a new train running between Lomonosov and St Petersburg.  All Lomonosov government is in Peterhof.

 

Duane announced that Alene Morris, ASCA Historian has resigned and Willy Evans will take over the historian duties.  Diane Davidson is the new Membership Chairperson.

 

PROGRAM:  A Tribute to Doyle Geer

            The tribute began with a Power Point Presentation by Duane created with pictures that various members had submitted.  Here was proof of Doyle “adventures” in Lomonosov and Kisakata.  Among those “roasting” and “praising” Doyle were:

Kathy Janke who told us of the early days of the ASCA organization.

Scott Gorman who added his observations of those early days.

Dean Maxwell presented a certificate of appreciation for Doyle’s contribution to the city of Anacortes and efforts to establish ASCA.

Sally Hill presented a certificate of appreciation for Doyle’s untiring support of the establishment of the Anacortes Community and Senior Center.

Others spoke about Doyle’s many contributions to the development and growth of ASCA.

The meeting/tribute was closed with the participation of Doyle’s favorite cake, baked by Theda Morton, and, of course, coffee and lots of conversation.
