GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

September 16, 2004

 

President Duane Clark called the meeting to order at 7:06 pm. He welcomed visitors among which were:  Mayor Maxwell, Guests from Sidney, BC: Janet and Page Lycett, Jean Robeson, Cathy Dorotich, and welcomed special members Doyle Geer and Sue McPhee.

 

Minutes:  A motion to accept the minutes of July 8, 2004 was made by Mark Lijek.  Suzanne Harris seconded.  Motion passed.

 

Correspondence:  Joyce Lapworth read a communication from the Friends of the Library thanking ASCA for transporting donated books to the Vela Luka Library. 

Duane read a note from Jane and Bill Brady, which included a donation made in memory of Alene Morris.

Duane reviewed a communication from Frank Brozovich, DDS, of Seattle welcoming ASCA to the participation in Croatiafest.  Mr. Brozovich is the Honorary Consul, Republic of Croatia.

 

Treasurer:  Mark distributed the 2003 Audit prepared by: Sharon Alban, Suzanne Harris and Sharon Horak.  He then reviewed the activity of the treasurer, July and August, 2004 as follows:

                        Checking Account Balance $803.68

                        Savings Account Balances:

                                    Scholarship Fund     $983.34

                                    Kisakata Exchange Fund   $25.00

                                    Reserve Fund             $245.00

    Significant Events:

The Kisakata Exchange Fund was distributed to the students in July prior to departure.  Each student received approximately $1100.00 from their fund raising.  (The first time the students/parents have raised ALL of the airfare costs.)

 

Judy Jewell was reimbursed $728.23 Town Crier expenses.  The City of Anacortes will, in turn, reimburse us $471.95 under our tourism contract.  This depleted the balance of the funds available under the contract.

 

Nikki Lovric was reimbursed $507.01 for expenses connected with the visit of the three students from Vela Luka.  Overall, the net cost of the trip and associated events for these students was $493.76 – after taking into account dedicated fund raising.

 

$2541.97 was paid, in expenses, connected with the flagpole project.  This includes concrete and electrical work and the purchase of ASCA t-shirts for the volunteers doing some of the work.  We will be able to seek reimbursement of $1000.00 of these expenses from the City under a tourism contract.

 

$500.00 was paid to Ruze Dalmatinke in connection with their performance at the Arts Festival, and was in turn reimbursed $500.00 from the Arts Festival.

 

$197.10 was paid to How It Works for the new ASCA logo.

 

Vice President:  Don indicated that the Flagpoles may be delivered this week and can be mounted upon the return of the Vela Luka trip.  He indicated that the electric lights are functioning well and the permanent light on the American flag is bright and beautiful.  Doyle reported that Kisakata sister city organization are so impressed with the Anacortes flag project that they plan to do the same in Kisakata.

New pins are on order replicating the new ASCA logo.

Don then presented the Committee Report for the nomination of officers for 2005-2006:

                        President – Duane Clark

                        Vice President – John Lovric

                        Treasurer – Mark Lijek

                        Secretary – Jo Fuqua

All members are reminded that they may make nominations from the floor.  The slate of officers will be voted at the November meeting and installed at the December meeting.

He reminded all Vela Luka “travelers” be at the Lapworth’s by 8:30 am on Sunday, Sept. 19th for departure via bus to SeaTac.

Duane expressed his deep appreciation for Don’s guidance as he assumed the office of president of ASCA.  (Don has been a long time member of ASCA and will continue to be an active member).  Duane then presented an ASCA shirt to Mayor Dean Maxwell and expressed his (and ASCA’s) many thanks for the fine cooperation the City of Anacortes has afforded ASCA.

 

Sidney, BC, Canada:  Judy introduced the guests from Sidney, BC.  She reported that she will be attending the North American Championship contest in New Jersey and therefore will not be in attendance at the October Membership Meeting.

 

Kisakata, Japan:  Cora reported that the 16 students and 5 chaperons returned from Kisakata and will present their experiences at the October General Meeting.

ASCA logo t-shirts can still be ordered.  Please call her regarding size, etc.  The deadline is September 24th for delivery of shirts at the October 7th General Membership meeting.

The Kisakata Committee met Sept. 15th to begin planning for the next student exchange.

 

Vela Luka, Croatia:  Duane reported that Nikki left last Friday and is now in Vela Luka.  He then shared some of the gifts that the delegation is taking to the Mayor (and others) of Vela Luka.   The CROTIAFEST will be held October 10th, from 12 to 5 pm at the Seattle Center House.  We are sharing a booth with the Anacortes American Croatian Club.  A bus will provide transportation to anyone wishing to attend.  Cost is $5.00.  Please call Nikki at 293-8530 to reserve your place on the bus. 

Please notify Nikki if you have commemorative items from our Sister Cities so that they may be displayed.

 

Lomonosov, Russia:  Suzanne reported that the committee has sent a letter of condolence to our Lomonosov Sister City regarding the tragedy in Beslan, Russia.  She has also forwarded Letters of Invitation for both Marina and Titana.  Marina (President of Kalinka) will be here one week and Titana will be in Anacortes for 3 weeks.  Volunteers are needed to tour the guests, entertain them, etc.  Please call Suzanne and discuss what you can do to make these guests welcome.  A welcome dinner is being planned for Oct. 9th.  THE COMMITTEE IS STILL RAISING MONEY TO PAY FOR MARINA’S TRIP.  (Titana is paying her own.)  If you have not purchased raffle tickets PLEASE

arrange to pick up your raffle tickets at Cap Sante,  Earthbound Books or call Suzanne.

 

President:  Duane expressed the need for a Public Relations Chairperson.

He reviewed the process that he has followed regarding the change of the name of the Golf Tournament. By Board action the Golf Tournament will be:  The Doyle Geer Golf Tournament.

 

Program: all enjoyed a Power Point presentation of Doyle and Scott Gorman’s recent trip to Kisakata, Japan with Doyle’s explanations of each photo.  He expressed his deep appreciation for Scott’s care while they were on the trip.  The new Mayor of Kisakata, Tadanaga Yokoyama, unexpectedly, was a long time acquaintance of Doyle’s, who was among the 1991 delegation from Kisakata to select a “sister city”. 

 

Janet and Page Lycett discussed the progress of the Sidney Sister City as they reorganize.  They also presented gifts to be taken to Vela Luka, Croatia.  They are renovating the little ferry which will be used in the parades of: Victoria, BC; Sidney, BC and Anacortes. WA.  ASCA members are invited to come to events of spring 2005.  Any ideas for fundraisers are welcome.  They then presented the Sidney, BC sister city t-shirts to Judy Jewell and Andy Hansen.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 pm.
