ASCA MEMBERSHIP MEETING

 

February 3, 2005

 

The meeting was called to order by president, Duane Clark at 7:07 pm.

 

Duane welcomed new member Janice Cook and guest, Carol Bourbeau from Oregon who is experienced in student exchange matters. WELCOME!

 

MINUTES:  Jack Papritz moved that the minutes of January 6, 2005 be accepted as distributed.  John Lovric seconded.  Motion carried.

 

 

 

CORRESPONDENCE: Duane asked Hisako Rooney to translate a letter from Mayor Yokoyama of Kisakata, Japan – in which the mayor wished Duane greetings for the New Year, thanking him for the support of 2004 and expecting the same this year. Duane indicated that he has exchanged various e-mails with the mayor and looks forward to meeting him in April 2005.

 

DUANE referred to a box of memorabilia representing the many travels and activities of Doyle Geer.   Peggy Geer, so thoughtfully, presented the collection to the ASCA for the historical record.  Duane passed around some of the interesting items.

 

TREASURER:  Mark’s report included:

No bills were paid this month. We received $600.00 in donations in memory of Doyle Geer and $1375 in dues income.

Including donations received in February, the total received so far in memorial donations for Doyle is $735.00

 

VICE PRESIDENT:  John Lovric had no report at this time.

 

SIDNEY:  Judy has contacted the Sidney president, Susan Simosko regarding Canadian recipes for our cookbook, the golf tournament, July 4th parade and competitions, and possible artists’ showing.  The Town Crier Competitions will be held on July 3rd in La Conner and July 4th in Anacortes.

 

KISAKATA:  Cora reported that the Student Exchange Students have had their second lesson.  Rob McKay, teacher of Japanese in Oak Harbor is their teacher.  They have learned to write their name in Japanese.  The students and their parents are busy planning fundraisers.

 

   ADULT TRIP – The trip is scheduled for April 21 – May 2, 2005.  Details are being worked out and should be finalized by the weekend.  Anyone interested in taking this trip, please call Cora (a.s.a.p.) at:  299-4335.  The trip itinerary includes 5 nights in Kisakata and 4 nights in Kyoto.

   ANACORTES YOUTH SPORTS COALITION AUCTION, March 19th – Cora is selling tickets and is looking for auction items.  Tickets are going fast, so call soon!  If you know anyone that should be contacted for donations for the auction, please call Cora, who will make the contact.

 

VELA LUKA:  Nikki received an e-mail from Sreten Zuvela, Director of Kumpanija who indicated difficulties in securing funds from the Croatian government.  He has the support of Vela Luka and the City Council which has offered to pay a portion of the trip.  He will keep us posted.

   STUDENT EXCHANGE – work is ongoing on the paperwork and guidelines.

   VELA LUKA CROATIAN DANCE ENSEMBLE – The annual Patron’s Party is scheduled for April 2, 2005 at St. Mary’s Church.  More details are to follow.

   CROATIAFEST 2005 – Sunday, October 2, 2005 at the Seattle Center.  The plans include a historical booth for Anacortes that will show the rich history that Croatian Immigrants have within the Anacortes area from the 1800’s to today, as well as the Sister City involvement.

LOMONOSOV:

   Suzanne reported, via Duane, that Marina was in the hospital for one month, that her daughter lost her expected baby; and that Tatiana lost her job.

   Suzanne encouraged anyone interested to join the Lomonosov committee and to contribute recipes for the cookbook.  She indicated that two businesses have already agreed to sell the books.

   Plans are being made to help 10 members of KALINKA to come to Anacortes this fall. We need to raise ˝ their airfare (approximately $5000.00 to $6000.00). 

          

   Duane announced that Anne-Martin McCool will do the art work for the cookbook.

 

  Maria read a letter written by Tatiana who visited Anacortes last fall.  She passed around an English summary of Tatiana’s article about Anacortes in a Russian newspaper.

 

 

   Duane distributed and explained the MASTER SIGNUP SHEETS – 2005 and requested that each member look it over and decide where they would like to put their efforts.  The choices include:  ASCA GOLF TOURNAMENT – June 26, 2005; ASCA COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP and the ANACORTES YOUTH SPORTS COALITION AUCTION – March 19, 2005.

 

   In response to a question, Duane explained that plans are in the works to add a sign listing all our Sister Cities below the flags on highway 20.  A sign listing all our Sister Cities is also being planned for the other end of Anacortes, near the ferry. 

 

PROGRAM:  Rudy Gahler discussed and presented a POWER POINT presentation on his and Dolores’ trip to Greece.
