VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT:  In the absence of John, Duane reported:

Today is the birthday of Don Lapworth.  The audience happily joined together in singing “Happy Birthday” to Don.

Scott Gorman wanted all to know that he has enjoyed and greatly appreciates the food that has been delivered to him during his illness.  His doctor has instructed him to become more active, therefore he will be purchasing and preparing his own food.  “Way to go Scott”!

Joyce Lapworth announced that Jack Greenewald has enjoyed the home cooked food that members have supplied and requests that once per week is sufficient.  She passed a sign-up sheet for volunteers.

Duane reminded the group that the July 4th celebrations will include a group from Sidney, BC and thanks all who volunteer to home-stay as well as various holiday activities.  Don will check on changing the banner for the parade.

Duane announced that the Anacortes city photo would be taken at 11th and Commercial, under the new arch.

Duane talked about the “art” of package unwrapping in Japan….not to tear the wrapping.  He then presented a special gift brought from Kisakata to Cora Lijek without whom the trip could not have been possible.  (It was a beautiful engraved jewelry box made of cherry wood from Japan).  Thank you, Cora, for all the work to organize and plan the trip!  GREAT JOB!

Duane presented a very special pin to Jack and Maria Papritz who are charter members of ASCA.

SIDNEY, BC:  In the absence of Judy Jewell, who was attending a Town Crier Competition in Los Angeles, Joy Walker announced that members are encouraged to attend the Sidney, BC parade and celebration on July 1st.  Please CALL JOY OR JUDY IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO STAY OVERNIGHT. (Overnight stays will be arranged by the Sidney members.)

KISAKATA:  Cora introduced members Jenny Ives and her mom, Kathy.  Jenny is an Exchange Student who is raising money for the trip to Kisakata in 2006.  Jenny displayed a beautiful quilt, made by her mom, and explained that the quilt is to be raffled off, with drawing in October 2005.  TICKETS ARE $1.00 EACH/6 FOR $5.00.

Tickets will be available at each ASCA General Meeting until the drawing.

Cora announced that the students have almost completed their studies of Japanese language and culture for this school year.  The Kisakata Students arrive August 2, 2005.  HOME-STAYS are needed.  PLEASE CALL CORA to sign-up for home-stays of the adults accompanying the students.

Anne announced plans for the Kisakata visitors who will present the “tea ceremony” and “calligraphy” during the Anacortes Arts Festival – 2005.  These events will be housed in the Baggage Room of the Depot.  The Depot Gallery will house an exhibit of work by well known weaver and fabric artist Anita Luvera Mayer, and a group of fiber artists will be displaying and selling their crafts in the Freight Room of the Depot.  On the first Friday, the opening of these events will begin at 6 pm until 9 pm in conjunction with the Old Town Anacortes gallery walk.  The tea and calligraphy will continue at scheduled times on Saturday and Sunday, 10 to 4.  We will need volunteers to sit at a welcome table during those times.  We can have information about Sister Cities and it is planned to have ASCA posters/photos on display.  The Valley Camera Club, which shows continuously in the Baggage Room, will also have some work of a “meditative” nature.  PLEASE CALL ANNE MARTIN MCCOOL TO VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME TO THIS EVENT.  Sato Kimo’s artwork will be on display in the McCool Gallery during the Festival.

Duane informed us that he is working on bringing the KYUDO MARTIAL ARTS demonstration to the Arts Festival next year.

LOMONOSOV:  Suzanne announced that the Cook Book is progressing well – thanks to the significant efforts of Willy Evans, Joyce Lapworth and Theda Morton. Books will be available in September and cost $12.50.

If you want to order more than four cookbooks, please let Suzanne know so that the initial order can be increased.  (Yes, the Cook Book includes recipes from our Sister Cities.)

Suzanne reminded the group that approximately 10 members of our Lomonosov Sister City will be arriving in September.  Home-stays are needed for one week.  PLEASE CALL SUZANNE and volunteer your home.

DOYLE GEER GOLF TOURNAMENT: JUNE 26th IS THE DATE!…PLANS ARE COMPLETE…and WE NEED GOLFERS!  Yes, 128 golfers are needed and 36 hole sponsors (not too many “holes” left) and all the Corporate Sponsors that we can muster.  IF YOU KNOW A GOLFER….SIGN THEM UP!  Make personal contact with golfers and let’s get the 128 golfers committed.  Doyle’s family will attend…the dinner will be outstanding and the prizes are GREAT!

JULY 7TH MEETING:  David Rapella will present pictures and information about his recent trip to South Africa. The adults and students from Kisakata will be here….so, how about a potluck?  (which will be discussed at the next board meeting.)
