ANACORTES SISTER CITIES ASSOCIATION
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETINGThe meeting was called to order at 7:07 pm. Guests were introduced by Delores Gahler: Torgie and Anna Torgeson and Bob and Sylvia Matson.
MINUTES: Don Lapworth moved that the minutes of the April 5, 2007 meeting be approved as published and distributed. John Lastar seconded. Motion passed.
TOWN CRIER UPDATE: Duane reviewed Judy’s July 4, 2007 retirement as Town Crier of the City of Anacortes after nine years of service. He announced that, despite the impossibility of replacing her, we have found a new and different approach to the job of Town Crier. When Judy Jewell was selected, there was a competition; however, many cities appoint their Town Crier. Richard Riddell has been appointed as the new Anacortes Town Crier. Richard is a very talented opera singer and has sung Opera all over the USA and Europe. He is presently on the Board of the Skagit Opera, he is a Rotarian, and he has various other organizational affiliations. He will be presented to the Anacortes City Council on Monday, May 7, at 7:30 pm where he will make a “cry”. Richard Riddell will become the official Town Crier of Anacortes on July 4th, in Causland Park – after the parade where he will be introduced to the Anacortes citizens. Judy introduced Richard to the members.
PATRON MEMBER UPDATE: Duane briefly reviewed the “Patron Member” benefits and recognized the most recent Patron Members: - Rudy and Delores Gahler. He then introduced new/former member: Sue McPhee.
TREASURER: Duane commended Mark for all the “extra work” he has done to get the new program “up and running”. Mark reported:

Significant Items: We closed out the 2006 Golf Tournament reserve and opened it for the 2007 event. The balance I reported is for 2007 income net of expenses.
We created a new reserve fund for the Sidney committee, to which I deposited the net income from the dinner earlier this month. We prepaid expenses of about $1200 for the Spring Zabava. We paid How It Works $135.00 for a new sign for the display at city hall. The Kisakata students earned $1744.00 from tulip painting and continuing sales of origami lanterns.
ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT: Don Lapworth thanked all who have worked the Golf Tournaments to make them so successful. He spoke, briefly, on the progress of securing sponsors for the 2007 tournament and indicated that things are progressing satisfactorily.
SIDNEY: Chairperson David Rapella announced the need for homestays for the Sidney people who will be celebrating July 4th with us. He asked for anyone going to Sidney for their celebration on July 1st let him know so that he can arrange homestays in Sidney. He announced that a July 4th Potluck Dinner will be held at the Cabana. ANYONE WISHING:
1. TO PROVIDE HOMESTAY FOR JULY 4TH EVENT,
2. OR, WANTING HOMESTAY IN SIDNEY FOR THEIR JULY 1ST CELEBRATION
3. OR, PLANNING ON ATTENDING THE JULY 4TH POTLUCK AT THE SKYLINE CABANA…
IS ASKED TO CALL DAVID 588-8781 or e-mail him: fuqua4@comcast.net.
KISAKATA: Cora Lijek, co-chair, reminded the group that the Japanese exchange students and 6 adults will come to Anacortes August 1 – 9th. The Kyudo’s will also be here for the Arts Festival. Regretfully, the Taiko Drummers are unable to come.
The next Kisakata Student Fund Raisers will be a Bake sale on May 11th at the IMPROV performance in Brodniak Hall and the “curb painting of addresses” in June. Duane commented that the students’ painting of tulips on the windows of downtown businesses (for the duration of the tulip festival) was a successful fundraiser and some of the business owners like the paintings so much that they do not want them removed at this time.
VELA LUKA: Nikki Lovric, chairperson, reported on the spring Zabava event and said that pictures of the Zabava Dinner will be available later. She said that the Vela Luka Exchange Students did a very good job of “sitting” the children during the dinner.
GOLF TOURNAMENT: Duane indicated that Tournament flyers will be mailed to all past participants, including Hole and Corporate Sponsors, next week. Follow-up contact will be made. The Golf Tournament Committee will meet next week. GOAL: 128 golfers and UNLIMITED Hole and Corporate Sponsors.
ART COMMISSION: Duane reminded the members that Marius Hibbard is a Board member of the recently organized Anacortes Art Commission. Future plans of the Arts Commission include special events on: July 28th, August 26th and November 7th. Specifics will be announced at a later date.
PROGRAM: Rudy Gahler narrated a trip through Switzerland – his homeland. The viewing experience made one feel that they were there! A delightful trip!
The meeting was adjourned at 8:35 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Jo Fuqua
