The meeting was called to order by President Duane Clark at 7:08 pm.

President Clark greeted guests: Jeanette Jones, Tony Kubena, Jack Frisk, Bill Turner, and Amanda Anderson.

MINUTES: The minutes and needed corrections were presented by secretary, Jo Fuqua.

Joyce Lapworth moved to accept the minutes of May 3, 2007 with correction to page 3, under VELA LUKA, as follows:  “She said that the Kisakata Exchange Students did a very good job of “sitting” the children during the dinner.” (instead of Vela Luka exchange students).

Duane reviewed the status of Town Crier, noting that our old and new will both be present at the July 4 parade and celebration in Causland Park.

Significant Events:

Total assets increased by about $9000, due primarily to income from the Golf Tournament.

We paid Judy Jewell $774.44 to reimburse her for expenses in connection with the Tulip Town tournament in Michigan, and in turn billed the city for $516.29 under the tourism promotion contract.

The Kisakata students raised $408.15 during the month.

          Cookbook sales netted $100.90.

          Dues income was $140.

Thanks to a generous gift from Dolores and Rudy Gahler, the Camarnic costume reserve increased by $100 to $210.00.

A new reserve fund for a scholarship program was established and $6000 moved into this account.  Duane will discuss the details of the program.

VICE PRESIDENT:  no report

ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT:  Don Lapworth reported that the Board of Directors has authorized $1000.00 as a donation towards the purchase of 8 native Romanian costumes.  With fund raising of another $1000.00 to put with these funds would match the $2000.00 to be donated by the French Sister City.  The total of $4000.00 would provide the costumes so needed by the citizens of Camarnic, Romania.  Our members who visited Camarnic and other cities of Romania last year learned of the great need to maintain their ethnic culture and the severe lack of funds with which to purchase these lovely costumes.  CONTRIBUTIONS MAY BE MADE TO ASCA with notation “costumes/Romania”…and sent to Box 1464, Anacortes, WA  98221.

SIDNEY:  Chairperson, David Rapella, has developed Deep Vein Thrombosis and is under Doctor’s order to restrict his activities.  Joy Walter has graciously accepted the interim chair for Sidney during the months of June and July.  We have some very important events:  The 2007 Golf Tournament – June 23; Canada Day – July 1; and the 4th of July parade and Celebration in Causland Park; and the 4th of July Barbeque on the grounds of the Cabana in Skyline at 3 pm.  PLEASE e-mail or call Joy Walter and let her know that you will attend the BBQ.  (There will be a $5.00 per person charge).

KISAKATA:  Cora reported that the Kisakata bound students continue to raise funds by painting addresses on curbs and having a booth at the Farmer’s Market, Depot Arts Center on Saturdays.  She announced that we expect 3 boys and 11 girls FROM Kisakata this summer: July 31 to August 8th.  They will be accompanied by four chaperones and two kyudo (traditional archery) masters.  Homestays will be arranged.

The Kyudo performance location will be determined as Duane meets with Joan Tezak of the Arts Festival.  We will need volunteers from ASCA to direct the public to the location to best observe the performance.

VELA LUKA:  The tentative trip to Lomonosov, Russia and Vela Luka Croatia  has been put on “hold” for this year; however some members will be visiting Vela Luka this summer.

2007 GOLF TOURNAMENT:  Duane’s comments included:

MEMBERSHIP:  Renewals for 2007 are almost complete.

DUANE: The ASCA Student Travel Scholarship balance is $6000.00.  This fund includes the annual Student Scholarship Fund grant and is for any student and ASCA membership is not required.  The criteria for using these funds is to be determined later, but must include the requirement that the student MUST share his/her experiences with ASCA upon return….and must have significant cultural/educational value.

PROGRAM: Our guests: Jack Frisk, Tony Kubena and Bill Turner presented two Power Point Presentations:

1. The Rotary Distribution of Wheelchairs in Montero, Bolivia, and

2. The Etta Project – a non-profit set up to help fund the Montero, Bolivia Rotary Club community center dedicated to provide food, education, and health care service to children in Montero.  The Non-profit was named for Etta Turner who was killed in Bolivia in November 2002.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:28 p.m.
