Total owned assets increased by about $6,000, due primarily to a very generous $6,000 grant from the anonymous foundation that has been supporting us in recent years.
The Golf Tournament generated a net profit of $8,814.15. This figure does not include the $4,579.35 that was transferred into the Kisakata Student Exchange Reserve.
The Kisakata students raised an additional $1,525.50 during the period.
Thanks to a generous gift from Don and Joyce Lapworth, the Comarnic costume reserve increased by $395 to $605.00
The City reimbursed us $516.29 in Town Crier expenses.
The Anacortes Arts Festival gave us a grant of $250 to help defray the expenses of the Kyudo archers.
We paid $260 for our annual liability insurance premium.
We received $335 in dues income.
We submitted our first ever IRS 990 Information Return for ASCA. This is required of non-profit organizations with gross revenues in excess of $25,000. We reported revenue of $79,555.57, most of which was due to Kumpanija. The PTP fund did not have to file a return because the requirement is based on a rolling three year average. Although the PTP fund grossed $30,752.81 in 2006, the three year average was only $19,904.91.
DUANE introduced guests Karisa Herrigstad, her mother, Carolyn, and Anita Padovan of Vela Luka, Croatia. Anita is a homestay guest of Diane Greene.
He read a request from Stanley Brown indicating that Bill Mitchell wants to create a mural of Jack Papritz on the side of the Keystone Building. An envelope was passed for members to make contributions to the remaining $300.00 cost of the mural.
GOLF TOURNAMENT: Duane announced that The 2007 Doyle Geer Golf Tournament was very successful. He distributed “Thank You” cards to those members who participated in that “success”.
VICE PRESIDENT: John reported that the changes in the City Hall ASCA exhibit are a “work in progress”. No other report at this time.
ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT: Don Lapworth explained that while in Carmanic, Romania, he enjoyed the Romanian folk dances. He asked what can ASCA do and was told that they wished they had their own costumes and didn’t have to borrow them. The ASCA Board agreed to match $1000.00 fund raised by members to reach the $2000.00 goal for costumes. That goal has been reached.
SIDNEY, B.C.: David Rapella, chairperson, thanked Joy Walters for her “stepping in” to the chair role while he was recovering. He announced that 9 ASCA members went to the Sidney CANADA DAY parade and 5 Sidney members came to Anacortes to march in the FOURTH OF JULY parade. In addition, 12 Sidney members came to the ASCA dinner.
He announced his plans to accompany a medical team, ROTOPLAST, to Cebu, Phillipines in November. He explained surgical procedures as corrections of Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate. The medical team is sponsored by Rotary International. If you would like to make a donation to cover the cost of a surgical correction for an individual child, please make your check to: Cebu City Mission in the amount of left Lip surgery - $500.00 and Cleft Palate - $600.00. David will provide “before” and “after” pictures of their sponsored child to each donor.
KISAKATA TOWN: Cora just returned from a 3 week trip to Washington, DC and New York City. She and Mark were accompanying their daughter to enroll in college. She reported that 16 Kisakata Town students and 4 adults were here for 8 days in August. They enjoyed a variety of activities, including a Mariners Game, Boat trip and Arts Festival. The Kisakata adults demonstrated a Japanese Tea Ceremony to approximately 35 residents of Anacortes at the Senior Center.
Cora reviewed the “Kisakata bound” students earnings through car wash, selling home-made items, etc.
She announced future plans for an adult trip to Kisakata Town in October, 2008.
DUANE announced that Marius Hibbard took pictures of the Kyudo Demonstration at the Arts Festival. Duane then selected one to provide to those who worked on the preparation for the demonstration – the 20’ X 36’ platform among many things.
Duane introduced Anita Padovan who spoke about her previous visit to Anacortes and her activities of the past 2 weeks of her visit this year. She will be in Anacortes for 2 more weeks.
MEMBERSHIP: No report.
DUANE introduced our new Town Crier: Richard Riddell who filled the room with his “cry”. He also submitted his membership to ASCA.
Duane then introduced Karisa Herringstad, who will be traveling to Spain. He reviewed the development of the STUDENT TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP, and reminded all that Karisa is the first recipient.
Karisa then spoke about the process of her selection through the “Rotary Youth Exchange” program that has specific criteria. Rotary offers costs of room/board, high school funds and $100.00 per month. The Student recipient is responsible for all travel expenses. She and her family have been busy raising/saving funds. She hopes to travel Europe while there. She will be leaving September 19, 2007 and will return January, 2008.
She explained that even though she is a 2007 high school graduate, she will be attending high school in Spain.
Karisa wants to be a nurse and has been accepted at the University of Washington.
DIANE presented an ASCA membership pin to Karisa Herringstad and Susan McPhee who recently renewed her membership.
DUANE announced the departure of the Lastars for RV destinations during the next two years. He then turned the meeting over to the Lastars to present their recent trip, via RV, to the Republic of Panama. John and Annie narrated the Power Point Presentation.
Respectfully Submitted,
Jo Fuqua, ASCA Secretary
