MINUTES FOR MEMBERSHIP MEETING
February 7, 2008
In the absence of the president, John Lovric, Vice President, called
the meeting to order at 7:05 pm. He welcomed all and asked Town Crier Richard Riddell to introduce his guest – Eleanore Riddell, his mother.
MINUTES: Having no additions/corrections to the minutes, Don Lapworth made a motion to accept the minutes as distributed. Cora Lijek seconded the motion, which carried.
TREASURER; Mark Lijek, Treasurer, reported the following:
Checking Account Balances: $3463.29

General Reserve: $2,611.08

Significant Items:
We donated $750.00 to the Sidney Sister Cities to underwrite their prize package for the AYSC auction. The $750 was fully covered by a donation.
We received a $100 donation from Joe and Setsuko Amburn.
Cookbook sales netted $37.50.
The Kisakata students received a $300 donation from the Kiwanis Sunrisers and raised an additional $180 through merchandise sales.
We received $660.00 in dues income.
.He indicated that his work on the 2007 Financial Report is progressing.
VICE PRESIDENT: John Lovric, Vice President, reported that the maintenance of the Flag Pavilion on Highway 20 has been accomplished (thanks to Duane and David). Select members of the Board are proceeding with the research for a Flag Pavilion near the Ferry Entrance. This proposed Flag Pavilion had to be delayed because of possible renovation of the Ferry road, etc. by the State. Since the renovation appears to be delayed or cancelled, it is the board’s opinion that background information and costs should be collected.
John mentioned that there are only 17 Cookbooks remaining for sale and ASCA pins and decals are available.
The DOYLE GEER GOLF TOURNAMENT will be held June 28, 2008. David will again provide the lunch. Please RECRUIT SPONSORS AND PLAYERS!
TOWN CRIER: Richard Riddell, Town Crier, will travel to Annapolis, Maryland the first week in May to participate in the North American Town Crier Competition.
SIDNEY: No Report
KISAKATA: Correction to minutes reported March 6, 2008 Membership Meeting: Cora Lijek, Co-chair, reported that Kyoko Honma, from Kisakata will be visiting Anacortes from February to March 4th.
As reported last month, Marcia and Jim Hardy will not be able to be chaperones for the Kisakata Exchange. Bev Bowen, A Fidalgo elementary teacher and Amy (Orr) Morris-Young will be chaperones along with Teresa Lewis and her sister Mary Mattson. The Anacortes Schools Foundation does not have the funding this year to award travel assistanceships of $750.00 each, for up to two school district employees. Consequently, Cora asked and received approval from the ASCA Board to award %500.00 each for the two school district employee chaperones, Teresa Lewis and Bev Bowen.
The Anacortes Youth Sports Coalition Auction/Dinner tickets are sold out.
February 21st is the next Golf Committee meeting.
VELA LUKA: Nikki indicated that there will probably NOT be a student exchange (going either way) during 2008.
LOMONOSOV: Don Lapworth, Chair, introduced the new committee: Willy Evans, Maria Papritz, Nancy Andrich and Sam Gebala. There has been communication between Maria Papritz and Marina Akhromova who indicated that the new Chair of the Lomonosov Sister City is Zoya Evseenkova who speaks English. They are now working towards sending four students to Anacortes, in August 2008, during the Arts Festival.
Don read a letter from Robert Geczi, the guide of the ASCA group that visited Romania in which he fondly remembered his time in the USA.
MEMBERSHIP: Diane Davidson, Chair, reported that 46 member families have renewed their membership for 2008. (85 member families in 2007).
PROGRAM: Rudy Gahler provided explanations and descriptions as he showed a Power Point presentation of his and Delores 5800 mile, two week, TRANS-SIBERIAN RAILROAD trip through Siberia, Mongolia and Russia. He shared information about the history, culture, religion and present politics of the countries crossed – but especially about Russia. The program was very well presented and covered a lot of information.
