General Membership Meeting

June 3, 2010


President Duane Clark called the meeting to order at 7:06 pm.  He welcomed members and visitors: Rita James, Joan Tezak, Laura Hamilton and Student Travel Fund  recipients: Clara Hill and Tanissa Lavigne-Thomas….and a special welcome to Wallie Funk.

Minutes:  Don Lapworth moved to accept the minutes of the May 6, 2010 meeting as distributed.  Theda Morton seconded the motion.  Motion  carried.

Significant Items:
We received $7,908.49 in Golf Tournament income.  This includes $3300 from the Anacortes Youth Sports Coalition.
The Kisakata students raised $290.00.

Assistant to the President: Don Lapworth heard from Angela Nasulea of Comarnic Dance Group of Romania who will be forwarding the names of the 15 people coming to Anacortes for the 2011 Arts Festival performance and the Brodniak Hall performance.

Duane introduced the recipients of the Lois Worthington Student Travel Fund:
Clara Hill is a junior at USC and will be spending a year in Paris, France.  She will continue her education in a college where she will speak French.  She is looking forward to the excitement of living and studying in Paris and many new experiences. She leaves August 25, 2010.  Clara is studying International Relations and anticipates going into Law school.
Tanissa Lavigne-Thomas will be repeating her High School Senior year in Brazil – speaking Portuguese.  Tanissa will be homestayed and hopes to travel to other communities. Tanissa leaves July 21, 2010.  Her long-range plans include some aspect of the law.

Duane
reported on the Golf Tournament progress and provided brochures and Golfer/Sponsor brochures for anyone who wanted them.  He said that the Golf Committee, parents and students that are going to Kisakata have been planning their activities for the Golf Tournament.  The following volunteers are needed: A judge for the putting contest; Judge (in general) and people are needed for the Clean-up Committee.  Call Duane at 293-8088 and volunteer!

Hospitality: 
Stan Stewart, chairperson, said, “No gofers this year.  Instead we need “Food Area Service Attendants” (2 people) and 2 people for Clean-up.  Please call Stan at 293-2955 and volunteer you help!

Kisakata:
 Cora Lijek reported that the students traveling to Kisakata are continuing their fund raising activities, including making paper lanterns which may be purchased at Scott Milo, McCool Gallery among other galleries.  She indicated that they will have a table at Ship Wreck Day and will probably have another car wash sometime soon.
Four visitors from Nikaho City will be arriving July 1 – 3, 2010.  The visitors consist of: Mayor Tadanaga Yokoyama, the Nikaho City council Chair, Fumiaki Sato and two city officers, Yoskihito Sato (who works on the exchange for the city, and Yu Sasaki who will be acting as interpreter.  The four will be going to Shawnee, Ok first, for a celebration of their 20 year relationship.  We are looking for homestays for the City Officers as well as people to transport them to and from SeaTac.  If you are interested in homestaying or transporting these guests, or just working on the activities, please call Cora, 299-4335 or Anne Martin-McCool \, 293-3577.
          The Anacortes Youth Sports Coalition Board gave us $3,300.00 ($300.00 more than last year) for the students going to Japan this summer, despite the fact that the auction made less money this year. 

Sidney, BC:
David Rapella, chairperson, circulated a sign-up for people who are interested in going to Sidney for their parade July 1.  He met with the Sidney Sister Cities Association and took a wheelchair like that which ASCA purchased from the WHEELCHAIR FOUNDATION in the name of the Sidney Sister Cities Association in appreciation for their giving the “little ferry” to ASCA.  The wheelchair will be sent to someone in the world that needs it.  They were most appreciative and one member bought another chair in her daughter’s name.  The “little ferry” will be brought to Anacortes on June 25th and will be stored by John Lovric.  It will need some touch-up to prepare it for the July 4th parade.

Vela Luka: 
Three Anacortes students will leave for Vela Luka, Croatia on July 2, 2010.  They will be staying two and half weeks.

Duane
announced our Membership Chairperson, Diane Davidson, needs to be replaced.  She has been a great Membership Chair and we appreciate her work very much.  If you are interested in taking this chair, please call Duane at 293-8088.

PROGRAM: 
Rita James and Joan Teak presented a great program covering the history and purposes of the Anacortes Arts Festival.  In addition to contributing to the cost of the Cormarnic Dance Group of Romania coming to Anacortes in 2011, they have worked with ASCA in bringing many groups to the Arts Festival.  In 2011 ASCA will provide dinners for two groups:  the ACHE BRASIL group from Brazil coming November 4 & 5, 2011 and ALASH, The Best New-Old Music from Tuva, coming April 26 – 29th, 2011. .  The ANACORTES ARTS COMMISSION is celebrating their 5th decade of providing the Festival the first weekend in August, and thriving arts organizations offer year-round programming in theater, music, visual and literary arts.
